Parent Lessons

Parent Lessons

  • ‘Having children makes you no more a parent than having a piano makes you a pianist’ – Michael Levine

Good Morning!

The day I brought my first child home from the hospital was the scariest day of my life.  I had no idea what to do!  For the first time I fully realized that this little baby’s life was literally in my hands and again, I had no idea what to do.

Schools educate us and then require us to pass certain tests before they send us out into the working world.  We take driving lessons and then must take a test before they let us drive a car.  In order to play the piano you need to take lessons.  Yet, the hospital handed me a baby when I had no education, had never taken lessons and no tests were given. I left the hospital that day with no knowledge of how to take care for this baby, immediately or in the future.  What is up with that?

The most important job in the world requires no education, no past experience, and not even one test before your job begins. It took me years of fumbling around, making mistake after mistake and riding on my broomstick before I realized that I needed some help with the overwhelming job of being a parent. I needed some lessons.

I don’t understand why, as a society, we think that having a baby automatically means that we know how to be a parent. I don’t understand why we assume that everyone will just know what to do? I don’t understand why we think we can play the piano without ever having taken even one lesson? Not everyone had good role models to follow.  Not everyone had someone to teach them what a good parent was.  Not everyone was given lessons in how to be a parent.

So…if you have questions about parenting, reach out to someone and ask them.  If you are feeling overwhelmed, find someone who can help you.  If you find yourself in the middle of chaos and can’t find your way out, find someone to help guide you. In other words, be strong enough to admit that you need some lessons.  I know from personal experience that it is something that you be forever grateful for…and so will your children.

Have some fun today!
